Help my dogs itching horribly?

My dog is a jack Russel terrier and shiatsu mix and is said to have allergies. He scratches constantly at his back side. We took him to the vet and after a week later he’s scratching again. We bathe him in a shampoo the vet gave us and that helps a bit. I don’t wanna bathe him daily because I hear it would dry his skin out and he would have more issues.The vet charges way to much to be going on a weekly basis. Is there anything I can do here at home to help the poor thing?

Talk to your vet about Benedryl for your dog. It is safe, and will help him with the itching. But, as your vet knows your dog’s health and weight, it would be best to get the actual dosing from him or her. They should be able to provide this info over the phone, for free. It may make him sleepy, but should help with the itching significantly.

Has your vet confirmed the source of the allergies? Is it food, inhaled allergens or contact allergens? Sometimes it is a combination of issues, requiring more than just a bath and some Benedryl. You might consider a hypoallergenic food, as well as getting the “scratch test” done to see what exactly is causing the “itchies”. <>

If the allergies are really bad, talk to your vet about long-term remedies. Prednisone is sometimes given in severe cases, but should be used as a last-resort due to the potential side effects. Talk to your vet regarding those.
